As the facilitator of our SOS group, I am so proud of the ladies who attend. They have learned some hard lessons in life, and they are making sure they don’t repeat them.
During one of our sessions, we made a list of absolute deal breakers regarding a new relationship. These were some of the qualities we accepted in our first marriages because we were young and in love.
Some of our deal breakers included avoiding relationships with anyone who exhibits: addictions, obsessive behaviors, dishonesty, abuse of any kind, and controlling behaviors.
One of the deal breakers on everybody’s list was to avoid anyone our children do not trust. We have learned that kids have the best instincts, and this time around – we will listen.
As some of the SOS women have completed the program, worked through recovery and healing and stepped into that scary world of new relationships, they have continued to keep their boundaries secure.
Two of them ended relationships because they stayed true to their deal breaker list. They knew they didn’t have to settle for less than the best.
One of them is now engaged, after she made it clear that her personal boundaries were important to her and would have to be respected.
I am so very proud of these strong women who are not jumping into new relationships just because they are lonely.
They know who they are and what they want. They now believe God has a good plan for their lives and they don’t want to jeopardize that plan with foolish choices.
They have learned to never settle in any avenue of life.
Starting Over Single doesn’t have to be tragic or filled with dread. It can be a time of self-discovery and growth, of life-long learning and development.
Best of all, it can be a time of learning exactly what you want out of life and going for it with gusto.
What about you? How have you learned to never settle?
