It’s a common problem for those of us who are Starting Over Single.

We think about all the things our “wasband” did to us and gradually grow angrier. Then if we stay in that angry place, it can fester and grow stronger.angry woman

The stronger it grows and the longer we dwell on it – the easier it is to step into bitterness.

But bitterness is dangerous. It’s a place and a condition that can literally and physically kill us.

Researchers have concluded that bitterness can lead to stomach ailments, cardio problems and in the most severe cases – even death.

Who wants that kind of prognosis hanging around?

Bitterness can also affect our creativity, our hope for the future and our relationship with God.

Bitterness prevents us from moving forward in life with a holy purpose and a joy that fills us with abundance.

It becomes a brick wall that blocks us from future healthy relationships and distorts our emotions.

So how do we avoid that black void of bitterness?

One of the keys is to IMMEDIATELY choose forgiveness. Now I know that total forgiveness is a process and it takes a while to get to that promised land.

But when we begin to think about what the “wasband” did – that is the point to say out loud, “I choose to forgive. Help me, God.”

It is the choice that breaks the cycle of dwelling in anger and merging into bitterness.

Journaling also helps and sometimes we need therapy to move past these blocks.

But choosing to forgive is the main point, because forgiveness removes the power fueling the bitterness.

The Bible makes it clear in Ephesians 4:31-32, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other.”

So let’s begin to work on all those bitter places that need the salve of God’s love poured over them.

Let’s be stronger and better women, marching into the future with hope and joy and not bogged down with sandbags of bitterness tied to our hearts.

Let’s stay alert for those bitter places and wash them clean with compassion, kindness and the choice to forgive.
