When we’re Starting Over Single, everything we do to move forward in life is important. We’ve talked about sleep and finances, laughter and exercise. Now let’s address the issue of nutrition.salad

If we want to stay healthy for this next phase of life, we need to protect the ONE body God has given us. It is important for the continued health of our home and our children. Our kiddos depend on us to be with them for the long run, so we need to focus on taking care of ourselves.

And…none of us want to deal with excessive medical bills. Guarding our nutrition will keep us away from the doctor’s office.

At first, when we are going through divorce, comfort food tastes good. We need a bit of chocolate and an occasional helping of French fries. But moderation in all things is an important mantra.

Although we might feel like eating a carton of Chocolate Truffle ice cream, stuffing our mouths with sugary treats will not help us move forward.

When we’re Starting Over Single, we need to think clearly about finances, parenting, job choices, etc. Eating and drinking junk will affect our brains and our thinking abilities. Junk foods will also affect us at our jobs and deplete the energy we need to take care of our children.

But if we commit to a healthy food plan and follow the action points below, we will feel better. We’ll move forward with healthier bodies and happier attitudes.

  • Delete high fructose corn syrup from your diet.
  • Eliminate sodas and other sugary drinks. This also includes diet drinks which may contain more harmful chemicals than regular sodas.
  • Drink high quality water that has been filtered and maybe a little coffee or tea – the real stuff – not the flavored coffees that contain more sugar.
  • A tiny bit of dark chocolate is good for you, but set boundaries around chocolate consumption.
  • Shop the outer areas of the grocery store where all the produce is kept. Avoid the inner aisles which have more processed foods.
  • If your budget allows, eat organic.
  • The Mediterranean diet has proven to be one of the healthiest lifestyle changes we can make.
    • Fresh vegetables and fruits
    • Chicken or fish
    • Extra virgin olive oil
    • Whole grains and nuts
    • Red wine or red grapes – in moderation
  • Avoid fast foods. They cost more than cooking at home and in the long run – they will trash your body.
  • Eat all your meals on a small plate or in a small bowl. When you eat less, you’ll feel better and sleep better.
  • Don’t eat after 6pm. This will help you with the previous tip – you’ll sleep better.
  • Shop in a natural foods store or in your local farmer’s market.
  • Try going gluten free for a couple of weeks. You may be surprised how much better you’ll feel.
