thankfulWhen we’re Starting Over Single, we know self-care is an important component of moving forward. We may understand how to physically take care of ourselves, but what about the emotional impact?

As we journeyed through divorce, we may have been surprised at the depth and strength of our emotions. Anger, resentment, fear, guilt, shame – all these and more.

So how do we take care of ourselves emotionally? How can we move past the emotional strain of the divorce into a place of peace?

Counseling and/or Coaching would be a place to start as well as joining a support group.

But ultimately, we are the ones who are responsible for guarding our hearts and taking care of ourselves, even when our emotions seem haywire.

Action Points for Emotional Healing:

  • Once a week, do something fun. You may have to rewire your brain and remind yourself it’s okay to do something fun.
  • Journal often and however it works for you. Try a gratitude journal where you list something every day that you’re grateful for. This practice helps lift the gloomies from our souls.
  • Pull out your colors and coloring book. Coloring is a great stress reliever.
  • Take walks at a nature center, around your neighborhood or at the gym. Walking is a great way to release healthy endorphins and fight against depression.
  • Call an old friend and share a coffee.
  • Schedule a Day of Joy where you visit an art gallery, stroll through a garden nursery, check out a music store or settle into a good book at the library or local bookstore.
  • Check out some of the fun courses at the community college.
  • Watch a funny movie or a TV show. Some of the old “I Love Lucy” or “Carol Burnett” shows are a hoot.
  • Bang on the piano. Beat some drums. Music is a great stress reliever.
  • Volunteer at the local animal shelter. Stroking a pet reduces blood pressure for both the animal and you.
  • Schedule a mani/pedi or a massage. Letting someone else touch you in a safe and comforting way can soothe some of that inner pain.
  • Treat yourself to a little dark chocolate.

As we acknowledge the emotions we are feeling, we are able to more effectively recognize them and deal with them.

It’s okay to have these emotions. They prove we’re human. It’s also okay to move away from some of the emotionally destructive side effects and march toward health.

Take care of yourself – emotionally – and find your place of peace once again.
